Whether you’ve got surprise guests on the way, the house feels like it exploded overnight, or you just need to feel a little more in control, this routine helps you clean smarter, not harder.
Let’s be honest—sometimes you don’t need a perfectly clean house. You just need it to look like you’ve got your life together… especially when someone texts “on my way!” and your kitchen looks like it lost a fight with breakfast.
That’s when it’s time to call in the magic of speed cleaning—because a little effort in the right places goes a long way.
It’s the art of making your home look presentable-ish in 15 minutes or less. No deep scrubbing. No full-on cleaning spree. Just simple tricks to fake a clean house fast—and honestly, sometimes that’s all you need.
Here are my favorite speed cleaning hacks that will make your space look instantly tidier and buy you some breathing room.
(Before you read any further, I want to be clear that this is a speed cleaning guide for your main living areas. This is useful for when unexpected guests will be stopping by. This is not for a whole house cleaning.)

Speed Cleaning Hacks for Busy Moms
Before you start, you need to gather a few essentials. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Large Basket (laundry baskets work great for this)
- Smaller Basket for toys
- Disinfecting Spray
- Microfiber Cloth or Paper Towels
I like to keep my cleaning essentials all in one caddy. I find it easier to make excuses to not do something if I have to go looking for something I need. Now, when I go from bathroom to bathroom, everything is in one convenient spot that can travel with me. I got mine at TJ Maxx, but this one is similar.

What to Clean During a Speed Cleaning Session
When you’re speed cleaning—especially because someone’s about to show up unannounced—the goal isn’t to clean everything, it’s to clean the right things. In this section, we’ll cover exactly what you should focus on to make your home look presentable fast (even if it’s not perfect).
After that, I’ll walk you through a step-by-step guide to help you tackle it all in the most efficient order—because when time is short, every minute counts.
1. Focus on the “First Glance” Zones
You don’t have to clean everything—just what people will actually see. Speed cleaning isn’t about scrubbing every corner—it’s about cleaning your house so it looks ‘good enough.’ We’re talking about what people notice first when they walk through the door (or what you notice when your brain starts screaming “it’s a mess in here!”).
These are your high-impact zones—the spots that create the illusion of a tidy home, even if your laundry room looks like it ate a basket of socks and never recovered.
Clear the countertops. Wipe them down, yes—but more importantly, remove the clutter. Mail piles, snack wrappers, sippy cups, mystery items from someone’s pocket… scoop it all into a bin or basket for later sorting (aka, “I’ll deal with this when I’m not spiraling”).
Straighten the living room. Fluff the couch pillows, fold the throw blanket, and corral the remote(s). Even just stacking a few books or lining up the coffee table decor makes the space feel intentional instead of chaotic.
Close the doors to disaster zones. If a bedroom looks like it was hit by a toddler tornado, shut. the. door. Same goes for laundry rooms, playrooms, or that one hallway closet that should probably be condemned.
Entryway reset. The front door area is your first impression zone. Kick the shoes into a bin, hang up coats, and give it a quick sweep if needed. Even if the rest of the house is mildly unhinged, a tidy entry says “Hey, I’ve got it (mostly) together.”We’re talking about what people notice first when they walk through the door (or what you notice when your brain starts screaming “it’s a mess in here!”).
Pro Tip: Grab your large basket and do a fast “sweep” of all the random clutter—shoes, toys, mail, mystery objects—and stash it in a closet or bedroom until you can deal with it later.
2. Wipe Down Surfaces That Get Noticed
No one’s going to be checking if you dusted the top of the fridge. But those crumbs on the kitchen counter? That sticky ring around the bathroom sink? Trust me—those are the first things people notice.
When you’re short on time, skip the deep cleaning and focus on surface-level wins. These quick wipe-downs give your space an instant refresh and make your home feel clean (even if there’s a mess just out of frame).
Here’s where to start:
- Kitchen counters: Clear off the clutter, then do a fast wipe. No need to move every appliance—just hit the areas that catch spills and crumbs.
- Bathroom sink & mirror: A toothpaste-splattered mirror and grimy faucet can make the whole bathroom feel gross. A quick swipe with a paper towel and all-purpose spray = instant upgrade. Swap out the hand towel while you’re at it.
- Dining table: Wipe away crumbs, fingerprints, and whatever mystery goo your toddler left behind.
- Coffee table: Pick up any clutter, wipe away smudges, and give the surface a fresh feel. It’s the centerpiece of most living rooms, so a quick clean here makes a big impact.
Pro Tip: Keep a stash of microfiber cloths and your favorite spray in a go-to “speed clean caddy.” That way, when you need to swoop in for a 5-minute tidy session, you’re ready to roll—no searching, no stress.
Remember: you’re not trying to impress the queen. You’re just resetting your space enough to feel good in it again. And sometimes, that’s all it takes to shift your whole mood.
3. Do the Dishes (Or at Least Most of Them)
A sink full of dirty dishes instantly makes your kitchen feel chaotic—even if the rest of the space is spotless. The fastest fix? Load everything you possibly can into the dishwasher and get it running.
No dishwasher? No problem. Stack the dishes neatly in the sink, group like items together, and give it a quick rinse to cut down on odors.
And if you’re truly in a pinch, stash the extras in the dishwasher or under the sink for now. It’s not a long-term solution, but we’re talking speed cleaning here—not deep cleaning perfection.
4. Vacuum the High-Traffic Spots
No need to vacuum the entire house—just hit the areas where crumbs and pet hair are most noticeable.
- Entryway
- Living room rug
- Kitchen floor
Even a quick once-over makes a huge visual difference.
5. Close the Curtains or Blinds
Hear me out: soft lighting hides a lot.
If your windows are showing every smudge and handprint, just close the blinds a bit. Instant mood—and fewer visible messes.
6. Open the Windows (Fresh Air = Fresh Vibes)
One of the easiest, most underrated speed cleaning tricks? Open the windows.
It takes literally 10 seconds, but the payoff is big. Cracking a few windows lets in fresh air, clears out stale smells (you know the ones—leftover dinner, kid funk, mystery odors…), and instantly makes your space feel lighter and more breathable.
Here’s why it works:
- It refreshes the air naturally. Stale, recycled air can make your home feel stuffy—even if it looks clean. Fresh air gives the room a reset.
- It boosts your mood. Something about a breeze and a little sunlight makes cleaning feel way less miserable. Even just 5–10 minutes can help.
- It helps odors disappear faster. Open windows = better airflow = faster stink evacuation. Pair it with a candle or essential oil diffuser for bonus “my house smells amazing” points.
If it’s not too cold or hot, keep the windows open while you speed clean.
Even if you don’t tackle everything on your list, your home will feel fresher—and sometimes that’s half the battle.
7. Light a Candle or Spray a Room Freshener
If it smells clean, it feels clean. This is science. (Okay, maybe just psychology.)
Bonus: Lighting a candle or diffusing essential oils makes it look like you totally had your life together today.

Speed Cleaning: What to Do and In What Order
Now that you know what to clean during a speed session, let’s talk about how to clean it—fast and in the most efficient way possible. This quick guide walks you through exactly what to do (and in what order) so you can make the biggest impact in the least amount of time.
Don’t Miss This Step Before You Start
After gathering your cleaning supplies, the first thing you need to do is take your disinfecting spray and spray down your bathroom sink and toilet, then let it sit. Now, let’s really get started!
Using Your Smaller Basket
- Take you smaller basket and toss in all of the toys that are laying arouond in your living/dining and kitchen areas.
- Toss entryway clutter into smaller basket.
- Hide this basket in the corner, or in a closet. You can put it all back in the right spot another time.
Move Into the Kitchen
- Using your larger basket, clear all the surface clutter from your kitchen and dining area. Next, stash that basket away where no one can see it.
- Load your dirty dishes into the dishwasher and turn it on. If you have time to do the handwashing, go for it. If not, hide those dishes somewhere else.
- Now that the sink is empty, give it a quick clean and rinse. I find it really easy just to use my dawn dish soap on my sink.
The Guest Bathroom
- Quickly take your microfiber cloth or paper towels, and wipe down your sink area and then your toilet.
- Give the inside of the toilet bowl a quick swish as well.
- Quickly wipe down the bathroom mirror.
- Replace the hand towel.
Countertops and Tables
- Wipe down the kitchen countertops.
- Wipe down the kitchen table.
- Wipe down your coffee table and/or any side tables.
Vacuum
Last, but not least, quickly vacuum your main areas.
And, don’t forget to…
Close blinds a little to disguise dirty windows.
Close doors to messy rooms.
Hide your baskets.
Light a candle or use an air freshener.
